The Experience Bhutan trip itinerary is ideal as an introduction to Bhutan and adventure travel. Suitable for all abilities and all ages, including families. This adventure holiday itinerary is also ideal for small groups wanting a privately guided trip choosing their own dates throughout the summer holiday period. Based in the UK summer holidays, it means it is prefect for those not able to travel in the traditional Bhutanese tourism season, and for this reason we can make it more affordable too! Using the many comfortable and traditional hotels as a base each night, we spend just over a week exploring this Buddhist Kingdom combining culture and adventure. Each day, we travel by private transport mixing visits to its fortresses and Monasteries with opportunities to experience the stunning landscape, by foot, on bike or paddling down the river by raft. Unique to this itinerary is a visit into the Haa valley away from the tourist route and offering the opportunity to really immerse yourself in the culture with a stay at a traditional converted home for visitors.
Day 1 – Arrive from Delhi Airport and transfer to the capital Thimphu. This is the largest city of Bhutan and is situated in the western/central part of Bhutan. Spend the first evening at your leisure in Thimpu exploring one of the world’s most intriguing countries.
Day 2 – Spend the morning sightseeing in Thimphu visiting the local markets, the famous Tarkin reserve and the Buddha Dordenma. Late afternoon drive over the Dochula Pass to the Punakha Valley. On the way we will stop and visit the 108 Stupas (Buddhist commemorative monuments) and Druk Lhakang (temple) at Dochula. Spend the evening in Punakha.
Day 3 – Morning hike through the pine forests, rice fields and villages, or take a mountain bike up to the put in of the Lower Pho Chhu and Raft the class 2/3 section down to the confluence of the Mo Chhu where the Phunkaha Dzong is located. After the raft trip and lunch, visit the fantastic Phunkaha Dzong.
Day 4 – Drive back over the Douchula Pass to Thimphu. Enroute visit the Chhimi Lhakang (aka Temple of Divine Madman). Spend the evening at leisure in Thimphu. Overnight at a hotel in Thimphu.
Day 5 – Drive or mountain bike, whichever you choose part of the way to the valley of Haa via Dawakha. Spend the evening here at an old local home now converted into a house for visitors. Sightsee around the quaint valley of Haa.
Day 6 – Drive or mountain bike again to Paro via the Chele La Pass. This is a spectacular journey with magnificent views if the weather is good. Late afternoon spent sightseeing around Paro valley. Spend the evening at a hotel in Paro.
Day 7 – Day excursion and hike to the Taktsang Monastery perched on a cliff 3000 feet high overlooking the Paro Valley and one of the most spectacular sights in Bhutan. Drive to the North end of Paro valley and visit the ruins of the Drukgyal Dzong (Fortress of the Victorious Drukpass). We will then have our final meal together.
Day 8 – Depart hotel to Paro Airport to catch your onward flight out of Bhutan.
